Heat Treated Pallets in Minnesota: ISPM-15 Certified Pallets for Export

If your business ships products internationally or works in food manufacturing, you've probably run into the requirement for heat treated pallets. They're not optional — they're legally required for most cross-border shipments. And if you're sourcing them in Minnesota, Gruber Pallets is your local supply partner.

What Is Heat Treatment for Pallets?

Heat treatment is a specific decontamination process that kills insects, larvae, and pathogens living inside raw wood. The process involves heating the core of the wood to a minimum of 56°C (132.8°F) for at least 30 continuous minutes — hot enough to kill any biological material that could be transported across borders.

This isn't the same as kiln drying for moisture control. Heat treatment is specifically about pest eradication, and the process must be performed by a certified facility and documented properly to qualify for international shipment.

What Is ISPM-15 and Why Does It Matter?

ISPM-15 stands for the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 — a global standard developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) that governs wood packaging material used in international trade.

More than 180 countries have adopted ISPM-15, including every major U.S. trading partner: Canada, Mexico, the European Union, China, Japan, Australia, and more. If you're exporting goods and your pallets don't meet ISPM-15 requirements, customs can refuse entry of the entire shipment, require treatment at the port of entry (at your expense), or destroy the pallets and potentially quarantine the goods.

For manufacturers and distributors in Minnesota, this isn't a technicality — it's a real risk that can delay shipments, damage customer relationships, and cost serious money.

How to Identify a Heat Treated Pallet (The HT Stamp)

Certified heat treated pallets carry a standardized mark you can identify in the field. Look for a stamp on the stringer (the thick boards running along the sides of the pallet) that includes the IPPC wheat-stalk symbol, the country code (e.g., "US" for United States), a two-letter treatment code — HT means heat treated — and a producer or certifier number.

A properly marked pallet looks like this: IPPC ⊕ US-XX-XXX HT

If you don't see the HT mark, the pallet is not certified for international shipping. Using unmarked pallets for export creates real compliance exposure — even if the wood was actually treated.

Who Needs Heat Treated Pallets in Minnesota?

Any business that touches international logistics needs ISPM-15-compliant pallets. Common industries in the Twin Cities region include exporters and manufacturers shipping to Canada, Mexico, Europe, or Asia; food and beverage producers (many food-grade facilities require HT pallets even for domestic shipment); 3PLs and freight forwarders managing compliance across multiple clients; medical device and pharmaceutical companies; and agricultural exporters who face the most scrutiny at border crossings.

Heat Treated Pallets in Minneapolis and the Twin Cities

Gruber Pallets is based in Lake Elmo, Minnesota — centrally located to serve businesses across Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, and the greater Twin Cities metro area. We maintain inventory of ISPM-15-certified heat treated pallets in standard sizes for same-week fulfillment.

Standard heat treated pallet sizes we stock: 48" x 40" (the GMA standard, most commonly required for grocery, food, and general freight), 48" x 48" (common in drum and chemical shipping), and custom sizes available with lead time for non-standard requirements.

We work with manufacturers, distributors, and 3PL warehouses across Minnesota who need reliable, documented access to certified pallets. For businesses with high-volume or recurring export needs, we can set up supply agreements to ensure you're never waiting on pallets when a container needs to ship.
