New vs. Recycled Pallets: How to Choose the Right One for Your Business

Every business that ships or stores physical product faces the same question: should I buy new pallets or recycled? The answer depends on your industry, load requirements, destination, and budget. This guide breaks it down clearly.

Factor New Wood Recycled Wood
Cost From ~$12 From ~$5
Load capacity Up to 3,500 lbs. Up to 2,500 lbs.
Export/ISPM 15 Available Not certified
Best for Food, pharma, export Internal logistics, cost-conscious ops

When to Choose New Wood Pallets

Food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. New pallets are free from chemical residue, pest exposure, and contamination. Required or strongly recommended for food-grade applications.

International shipping (ISPM 15 compliance). Shipping outside the US requires pallets with the ISPM 15 heat treatment stamp. Only new pallets manufactured to this standard qualify.

High load-weight applications. New pallets are rated to 3,500 lbs. static. Recycled pallets to 2,500 lbs. The margin matters at the high end.

Appearance matters. If pallets are visible to customers — retail display, trade show, customer-facing warehouse — new pallets look better.

When to Choose Recycled Wood Pallets

Internal warehouse and distribution. Moving product within your own facility doesn't need a new pallet. A solid Grade A or B recycled pallet handles internal use reliably at lower cost.

Non-food industries. Automotive, industrial, retail, building materials — for most of these, a recycled pallet is perfectly appropriate.

Cost-sensitive, high-volume operations. A $7 difference per pallet across 1,000 pallets is $7,000 per order cycle. If the application allows recycled, use recycled.

5 Questions to Ask Your Pallet Supplier

  1. Are your recycled pallets inspected before delivery?
  2. Do you offer heat-treated pallets with ISPM 15 certification?
  3. What sizes do you stock, and how quickly can you deliver?
  4. What's your on-time delivery rate? (Gruber's is 99%+)
  5. Can you handle custom sizes and volume orders?

At Gruber Pallets, we stock both.
